“I was making a career change and moving states so I decided why not change my life in all aspects,” Aliza Li told Remixd Magazine. “I felt like I was starting over and I wanted to start over with things I wanted out of life. Life is short, why wait to go after what you want?”

At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music?
I’ve been wanting to pursue a career in music all my life but five years ago I decided to get serious.
Has your upbringing played a role in shaping who you are and defining your sound today? If so, how?
I would say it has, I moved around a lot growing up and I think my sound incorporates a little bit from everywhere I have lived.
How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?
My sound is classic R&B with soulful tones with sprinkles of hip hop.
What ultimately inspired you to dedicate yourself to a music career?
It took me a while to “grow into myself” and what I mean by that is accepting me for me. Music is as much a part of my as my hair and my eyes. When I embraced myself, I embraced music.
What’s one reason you are passionate about music and what inspires you?
For me, music is my outlet, my truth. It’s how I get to fully express myself.
Do you have any hobbies outside of music? What do you do to stay creative?
Outside of music, I just try to keep peace in life with meditating and exercise. Being outside, taking positive mental health breaks and taking in the simplicity of just being helps me stay creative.
Who are some of your main musical influences?
Definitely Jill Scott and Erykah Badu.
What are some of your music career goals for the future?
I’m mainly focusing on developing my sound and myself as an artists. I want my sound to be even more unique than it already is. To me, my sound is me and I’m trying to get to the point where I hear my reflection.
Tell us about your new single “7th Grade Complex.” What’s it about?
The single “7th Grade Complex” is about finding comfort in unsuccessful relationships because they help make you into the person you are. Its a classic smooth R&B vibe with a feature from another talented singer named Dessy and lyrically-wise it’s as candid as it can be. Actually 7th grade was complex for me so it hits home a lot. The last solo single I released was called “Bit a lemon” which had a soulful jazzy feel.
What has the response been like to that project?
The response has been great! The feedback that I received was that is a smooth track with strong vocals. A lot of people seem to relate to the message of the song.
What are some projects you’ve done in the past that you are most proud of and why?
I love all my projects but if I really had to pick, I would say my first EP Sometimes I get High because I had so much going on personally that it almost didn’t happen. For me it solidified this music thing is real.
What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for?
I’m currently working on another EP but this one will be very different from anything I’ve previously put out. I’m shooting for some time in 2021 if the stars align.
What message do you hope fans take away from your music?
That whatever you are going through, you’re not alone and it’s never too late to start embracing yourself!
